7 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Collections in Lightroom Classic Instead of Folders.
You know I’m a big fan of collections, and my entire workflow is built around collections, and it’s where Adobe is moving with Lightroom, but if you want to know more about why you should consider the many benefits of a Collection-based workflow, check out this video from Terry White on “7 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Collections in Lightroom Classic Instead of Folders.”
Thanks, Terry — that was awesome! 🙂
Meet Terry at Photoshop World This Week!
Terry is the Keynote Speaker at the Photoshop World Conference opening keynote from Adobe this week out in Las Vegas, and he’ll be teaching in the conference tracks as well. If you’re at the conference, make sure you stop and say hi to Terry. He’s one of the nicest, most gracious people in our industry, and we’re honored to have him as our keynote speaker for this 20th
Lots of Photoshop World Info over on my blog today
I’m leaving today for the conference, which kicks off tomorrow with the pre-conference workshops, and then Wednesday morning we are streaming the opening keynote live. Lots of details about this week over on my blog.
Friday is the last day of the conference, and I doubt I’ll be able to get a post up for Friday, so…..well…ya know. 😉
Have a great week. I’m on my way to Vegas! Whoo Hoo!!! 🙂
-Scott
P.S. Next week (right after Photoshop World), I’m headed to Boston and Philadelphia with my “Ultimate Photography Crash Course” full-day seminar. Hundreds of photographers are already signed up to join me for the day — hope you can, too. Go to KelbyOneLive.com for details and tickets

I gave it a new try but still it’s just possible to do a 1:1 generation from the root of a folder. No criteria possible. Not even afterwards you can change anything in a smart way.
I also wonder why you can select color marks for individual folders as well as for selections. But if you create the collections from folders with color marks the color marks aren’t copied to the collection. Not well thought or a bug?
30 minutes is a long time to watch to see if there is anything new there, so here are the 7 things:
1. Kind of the definition of a collection, you can have photos from multiple folders
2. Images can be in multiple collections
3. You can sync them with mobile
4. Images are auto-stacked in collections when you use an external editor
5. There are no folders in the “chooser” in any module but Library
6. You can sync with the cloud on creation and then share with others, allow comments, picks, etc. This was a long one
7. Smart collections
Thanks Eric!
Thank you, Eric, very helpful — you just saved me 29:30! 🙂
If you have to handle just a few images it’s OK the way it is. But if you have to keep your folder structure (Year-> YYYY-MM-DD Event – City – Location) and you can’t create the collection structure automatically on top of this it’s a bit useless with more than 450.000 images in the catalog. I just wanna point to the root and then say create collections (incl. criteria) like the folders are structured including subfolders. That would be helpful. That’s why I only use collections in a limited way.
In addition: If I work in folders and edit in photoshop the edited photo also shows up next to the one edited. Multiply copies of the images can be done by creating virtual copies!
Rudi, virtual copies are completely different than the same image in multiple collections feature.
Thanks Eric, I think the question was of multiple copies not multiple collections? He then showed multiple images in a print form and I thought this wasn’t the question as he showed before that images can be in multiple collections. Maybe it’s just my understanding?
Terry, I’m an old school folder guy but I’m going to start using collections also. You’re a great teacher and I always learn something watching your videos.
Thanks
Mark
