Lightroom in 60-Seconds: What To Do When Lightroom Messes Up!
Hey, it happens — Lightroom screws up; doesn’t act right, something doesn’t work the way it used it, etc. Here’s how to fix it using the same method you’d learn from Adobe if you called their tech support line:
Well, there ya go! 🙂

I hate when the recommended action is to reset the Preferences. No regard is given to the fact that they user then has to trawl back thru all the settings and try to remember what the old settings were.
Why does Adobe not have a reset settings option, which keeps the user fields as they were and reset the fields and records which need to be reinitialised. Poor mans option is ability to print the settings so we make sure we can return the settings to their original status.
Resetting the preferences should be called delete the old preference file and replace it with a new one, which is why your suggestion couldn’t work. It is deleting the old preference file that solves the problem (when it does solve the problem), not just resetting some fields. Most people don’t change the defaults, so there’s really not much to lose. At the most, a few checkboxes on the General tab for sounds if you include them.
Hi Rob,
Correct me if I’m wrong, but you could just to a screen capture of the preferences and then reset and use them to reset to the old preferences. Also, if you reset the preferences does that help with how brushes and sliders work?
Dennis
Screen shotting preferences screens is fine, as is simply noting the (few) settings (if any) you change from default. Resetting (trashing) preferences only helps if there was something wrong with the preference file. Sometimes it fixes weird things. Sometimes it doesn’t affect anything. It is just the next step after, “Have you tried rebooting” doesn’t fix the problem. 🙂
screenshot the panels and save those captures as a future reference.
it’ll save you a lot of time if you have to do this.
I do that in all the software I have to do configurations on.
Both windows 10 and macs have simple screen capture (or areas of screens so you can crop in) that make this possible.
YMMV
