7 Tips for Photographing in Cities

Don’t Forget to Wear Really Comfortable Shoes

You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you wear shoes that make your feet happy. Don’t forget sunscreen (or a raincoat, depending on the weather for your walk).

Charge your camera batteries tonight

Don’t forget to charge your camera batteries, clean your lenses, and ensure you have an empty memory card and a backup.

Bring LOTS of water (and drink lots of water!)

This is key! You don’t want to dehydrate on your walk – you want to have 100% fun the whole time, so make sure you drink plenty of water before the walk and during the walk – it makes a big difference in your enjoyment of the walk and your safety and well-being.

The Most Important Thing Is… That You Stay Safe

Look out for each other on the walk. Don’t go into scary-looking areas, traipsing down deserted alleys, or anyplace that looks unsavory. Don’t get distracted by shooting – you don’t want to bump into or trip over anything.

I’m excited to be in Scotland today, leading a local walk here tomorrow in the old town area, along with Eric Kuna, Dave Williams, and some of the other members of Team Epic (including Chicky Nando).

Only 5 days until my 13th Annual Worldwide Photo Walk, and today I’m off to London (heading there first before I take the train up to Edinburgh on Friday to lead a local Photo Walk there on Saturday. I’m there with my brother Jeff (he hasn’t been to London in like 40 years, so we’re stopping there for a couple of days before we head up to Scotland). 

It’s not too late to sign up for a photo walk in a city near you – head to worldwidephotowalk.com and sign up (it’s free), take lots of photos, meet some new people, and have some fun. That’s what photo walks are all about.

P.S. Thanks to the NECCC for putting together such an outstanding photography conference this past weekend and to everyone who came out to one of my classes. I had a fantastic time, made some new friends, got to spend time with some old friends, and had a wonderful experience all the way around. STEP ONE: Here’s a collection of color images and I want to see which of these would look good as a Black & White.

STEP TWO: In the Collections panel, right-click on the Collection and choose “Duplicate Collection” as shown here. You can duplicate this collection without duplicating all the images — it just duplicates the thumbnails (not all the image files, so it doesn’t eat up any real space on your hard drive).

STEP THREE: Now, in this new duplicate collection, press Command-A (PC: Ctrl-A), to select all the images, then press the letter “v” to convert all these images to Black & White (remember, all the original color images are still in their original collection, still in color).

STEP FOUR: Now, click on any image that looks good in B&W, and press the number ‘6’ on your keyboard to label it with a red label. Now select just those Red labeled images by going under the Edit menu, under Select by Color Label and choose “Red” to select just those images you marked with a red label.

STEP FIVE: Now go back under that same Edit menu, under Select by Color Label (again), and choose ‘Unlabeled.” This selects all the image you DIDN’T think looked good in B&W.

STEP SIX: Now just hit delete to get rid of all those images you didn’t like, and what’s left? Just the ones that look great in B&W, and they’re in their own separate collection, and your originals are still in their original collection, untouched, still in color. Boom. Done.

Now, are there other ways to do this same thing? Of course, there’s lots of ways to do most everything in Lightroom, but I hope you’ll give this version a try and see what you think.

We raised over $20,000 for The Springs of Hope Orphanage

I know a lot of you stepped up to join walks, bid on blind auction items, and bought the official t-shirts…and man did it all pay off. We raised thousands more than we even did last year (something we did not expect with our modified photo walks this year), and anyway…thank you.
