Good News: DxO Released a New Version of The Nik Collection, and It Works! Bad News: No New Features, and They’re Charging For It.
Happy Friday, everybody! Just a quick heads up; the fine folks at DxO have released an update for the Nik Collection — it’s the same Nik Collection as always (no new features), but now it actually works across all the new Adobe applications (including the most recent Photoshop CC and Lightroom Classic updates), as well as the most recent Mac OS.
This update is $49 (on their site, it looks like it will move up to $69 at some point).
Don’t be down on DxO for charging
Look, they did a great thing — they invested a ton of money in updating mountains of code, across a bunch of plug-ins, and brought a beloved plug-in back to working order for all the folks whose version of Google’s application no longer worked. They didn’t “owe” anybody anything (though I think Google kinda did), so I give big props to DxO, and there is nothing wrong with them charging for the update to recoup their investment (it would have been wrong for Google to do so, but not for a third-party like DxO who basically came to the rescue). DxO isn’t a charity — their employees need to feed their families, too so I applaud DxO for what they did, and totally understand why they are charging for the update. Hope you do, too.

In case you’re wondering, “Scott, does this mean you’re going to stop using Luminar?” (you were going to ask that, right?), the answer is no — I’ll absolutely keep using Luminar. It rocks! While it certainly was a great replacement for the Nik Collection when it died, Luminar has a LOT of features the Nik Collection doesn’t — plus they are constantly adding new features to Luminar and growing the plug-in’s capabilities very quickly, so it will remain an important tool in my bag of tricks (errrr, I mean my “plug-in arsonal”) right along with the Nik Collection.

I need to confirm this. the new NIK software that is available to order now, Feb 2019, integrates with Photoshop 2019, and Lightroom CC 2018, Mac operating system High Sierra (or DX0 emailed me just now that it works with Mohave) but I’m wondering about High Sierra – I need them to integrate perfectly.
I would reach out to DxO support directly for confirmation.
It does not work with Lightroom CC 2018.
One should also not forget that some users have also paid for very expensive NIK licenses in the first place, those probably still recovering from the shock to see their worth gone to zero value. I think to just re-market without significant updates is not sufficient as a value proposal to again buy into all this. Tried the trial and for me there is no benefit whatsoever. As a minimum I would like to see the control surface to be usable on 4k monitors, still almost unusable at present.

i was a fan of capture nx2 when lightroom 3 was still a toy.
u-points are magic ! much powerful than a brush I think.
This is unique and couldn’t die !
However separate plugins is not easy in a workflow especially with lightroom core and requires several huge tif in case we need to come back to viveza process,….
It would be nice they are integrated in DXO photolab as “normal filters” and/or
DXO film pack elite.
Most important plugin for me is Sylver efex pro 2. never found any software or actions (zone system, lumenzia, gradient map, ON1…) doing such beautiful b&w

Does Nik software work on Lightroom CC or only on Lightroom classic CC?
Lightroom CC does not currently integrate (send to or receive from) with any editor other than Photoshop.
can someone explain to me the actual benefit of Nik and Luminar vs the time it takes to use it? I mean, culling, cropping and editing in LR, much less going to PS for my photos is a crazy time consuming process as is.
Man, people baby cry too much. The software is pretty awesome and it’s s good thing what theater l they’re doing. It may not have any new features but they’re upgrading it to work with the current version of Photoshop and other Adobe programs.
Nik Collection has been part of my workflow fit the past two years but sadly, it would crash Photoshop every time I use the plug-in from within Photoshop. If they fixed that I have no complains for the $50 update (considering it is about 30% of my workflow).
Strange: the old plugins still work with Lightroom Classic on my Mac with High Sierra. No need for the updated version here!

So worth the $50. I use them more than Photoshop itself…
$50… that’s only 32 20-oz diet cokes, although it’s 50 if I buy them from the machine in the Costco… that’s how cheap I am…
32 for $50? And you think you’re cheap? You sound rather stupid. Why not go to Kroger and get 4 for $10. That’s 32 if you need help with the math which I think you do.

I downloaded it and installed it and it work GREAT!!! I don’t have a problem with DXO charging for this updated at all! I, like you, applaud them for doing this. In fact, I thought they would be charging closer to $100.

LOL, when I received the email this past Wednesday saying this was available, the first thing I thought of was you telling everyone to get over it and move on – it’s gone forever. I agree paying for the reboot is worth it – and now you get your Pro Contrast filter back! I agree Luminar rocks too – its great to have all of them available now!
It was gone. Google announced they were no longer developing it. If Google hadn’t sold it to DxO, it would still be gone. Three cheers for DxO! 🙂
You’re quite right Scott – of course they should be reimbursed for their work. Rudi says he paid 150 EUR. I paid more than that for each individual program in the suite originally! So what’s the problem – you don’t go into a shop and expect things for free. Google giving it away was a warning sign to anyone who thought about it so Kudos to DxO for rescuing the product. I’ll look forward to seeing what they do with it.

I paid 150EUR before Google bought it gave it away for nothing. Now I should pay again.. oh and btw. the last Google version still works under High Sierra.
Not on either of my machines, with the latest version of Photoshop or Lightroom, until this update.
And windows and it appears its the updated version.As for rebuying it. Adobe charges every year for an updated version We just got spoiled that Nik had not.
