Lightroom By The Numbers (A bunch of really handy keyboard shortcuts using numbers)
Hi Gang. First, please let me apologize for posting the totally wrong video yesterday for Ben Warde’s “Lightroom Coffee Break.”Totally my fault, and worse yet, I didn’t learn about the problem until late in the day. Luckily, it’s fixed now, and it’s a really handy tip so here’s a link to jump back to yesterday to catch his helpful 60-second tip.
Today, I did a short video for you with a bunch of really handy keyboard shortcuts that all use numbers. They’re really easy to learn and remember, but they can save a ton of time (and I’ll bet there’s a few in there that even really seasoned Lightroom pros might not know). It’s worth checking out.

As mentioned using Shift with a rating or colour key causes auto advance if the Auto Advance option is turned off. If you like this behaviour and turn Auto Advance on, then you can use Shift to prevent auto advance when you want to rate or select colour and stay on the same image.
Windows 10 grabs some multi-key combinations and you have to go learn how to unmap them on your own before they work in your application…
The CTRL-ALT-UPARROW flips whatever app window I have active upside down, and the right and left arrows similarly side-to-side. LR doesn’t act with them at all internally. To my knowledge there’s not a windows utility to list all of these mappings. I had special screenshot tied sequences which were “stolen” which I couldn’t re-assign. Heads up – maybe affects other people in ways they hadn’t figured out yet. If someone knows how to reverse all this with win 10 shortcuts being taken, easily without another yet another tool, please respond how here ?
I’ve had several Windows laptops where I had to go into the BIOS and tell it to stop using the function keys without the Fn modifier key. In other word, if F2 and F3 control the volume, those keys don’t work with Alt/Shift/Control combinations. What I want is to have those keys only control volume when used with the Fn key.
This is going to be different on different brands. For example, Dell calls this Function Key Behavior in the Advanced menu and Lenovo calls this Hotkey Mode in the Configuration menu. Anyway, once I figured this out, life got a lot easier, both in Lightroom and in Photoshop, where function key combinations are common.
I had to do the same thing on my Mac keyboard. To access the F-key, I have to hold the fn button, then the F-key. 🙂
