Adobe Releases New Features for Lightroom CC and Lightroom Mobile
Big news for Lightroom CC users — Adobe just announced the 2015 Release of the Creative Cloud, and in it came some very awesome new features for Lightroom Mobile, and for Lightroom on the desktop.Â
They introduced a very cool new feature (which Adobe already kind of “sneak peekedâ€) for Lightroom on the Desktop, and they made a big improvement to one of its existing features. NOTE: these new features are only available in Lightroom CC — they will not be added to Lightroom 6 (as RC and I mentioned to death at the initial launch just a few months ago).Â
We’ll start with the Lightroom for your Mobile Device stuff, because they’re pretty substantial: First, they added three Develop Module features from Lightroom Desktop to the mobile version, and they implemented them in a very clever way (from a User Interface standpoint).
The Color/B&W panel is here!Â
You know it, you love it, you can’t live without it, and now it’s in Lightroom Mobile’s Adjust panel: Just swipe upward on the tiles and you’ll see all three new features (note the little icon on the far left that lets you know which set of controls you’re seeing. This is a mobile version of the HSL panel, and also, check out the on-screen controls for adjusting each individual color (you can do it even after you convert to black and white as seen here). You just click and drag the HSL sliders where you want them, right on screen.
How ‘bout them Vignettes!
Coming straight to you from the Effects panel in the Develop Module, it’s the same controls that do the same thing. Glad to see them here (you access them the same way — swipe up/down on the row of Adjustment Tiles).
The Mighty Tone Curve
I honestly did not expect to see this one here so soon, but it is, and it’s very cleverly implemented — right on screen. Note: I put the thin white box around it is just to make it easier for you to see — there isn’t an outline around it — it just blends right in nicely. Just tap on screen and drag the curve up or down, and you can drag the sliders underneath the curve the same way.

Another new feature: Â now you can add videos you took on your camera or tablet; add them to LR Mobile, and they will sync back to your Desktop Lightroom.
OK, that’s the big stuff for Lightroom on your mobile device. On to the Desktop features:
The Dehaze (or add haze) Effect
This is the one Adobe sneak-peeked, and it’s actually pretty darn slick, and anyone who shoot underwater photography, or takes shot at an aquarium, or just shoots on hazy days will so love this. It cuts through haze amazingly well (and it doesn’t just add really ol’ contrast — it’s its own brand of contrast that works particularly well for this type of stuff). It’s found at the bottom of the Effects panel.
If you drag the Dehaze slider to the left, it becomes the “add haze” slider (see above right).
One more big thing for Desktop (see above)
The Whites & Blacks sliders have been added to the Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter and Radial Filter. Sa-weet! 🙂
Well, that’s a quick look at what’s new in the 2015 Creative Cloud update from Adobe (there’s Photoshop CC stuff, too — Camera Raw got the Dehaze filter and the Whites & Blacks sliders in the Adjustment Tools so it stays consistent when working between LR and PS).

For me, I will stay with my last LR6 perpetual license and “milk it to death”. I have no need for “mobile” or “photoshop”…. Just LR. There is no way I am paying $10/month in perpetuity for a bunch of functionality I do not need or want. Lightroom is not the only game in town, eventually there will be a decent competitor and either LR will want me back or I will switch.
Scott, sorry to say this but you sound like an “Adobe Lobbyist”. I do believe that you and your company might be just a little bit too much “in bed” with Adobe on this one. Please knock off the “I told you so” and stand up for the users. I really enjoy you shows and material but am beginning to wonder if your interest is in us…. or your alignment with Adobe.
I sincerely hope Adobe recognizes this and continues to make LR a standalone product as the promised several months ago….

The only thing that Lightroom CC is missing that I would love for it to have is a one click button that makes all my sports photo’s come out like yours. and a one click button that makes my landscape and people photo’s come out like Jason Lanier’s. You think if I ask Adobe really really nicely they can do that 😀
I was told that Lightroom 6 is it. There will be no Lightroom 7 only CC. That’s why I decided to bit the bullet and go with Lightroom CC. I am glad I did as long as Adobe keeps releasing new stuff when it is ready. I agree that Adobe ought to make that clear one way or the other.
Can’t wait to play with the de-haze slider. Love what Adobe has been doing lately.
Stupid question here. I have an Android phone. I’ve upgraded LR and PS on my computer, will the phone app upgrade by itself? I’ve checked my LR app on the Google Play Store with my phone and it is not showing an upgrade?????
This release includes a fix to the problem of flashing and losing edits to tiffs returned by plugins, if you have the lib set of save changes to XML files. I’ve tried the 4 I have and all are working with Save changes to XML file enabled in catalog preferences. No need to endlessly get out of LR and back in to be able to save edits on files of that origin.

This update did indeed fix the redrawing problem with plug-ins!!! yeah!!! It also fixed the problem I’ve been having with my Wacom tablet! Yeah, again!! I’ve gone in an out of plug-ins and to PS-CC and everything works great now! One thing to be careful of is don’t change the file name of LR-CC. I had done that so that on the dock it would say Adobe Lightroom CC 2015 (I still have LR 5.7 installed). When I went to update yesterday … it finished updating but put an addition .app in the folder that wouldn’t load. So, I uninstalled and reinstalled and it worked fine. Just a heads up.

While I feel a bit ripped off that if I buy perpetual copy it doesn’t get the same updates as the CC copy I feel there is one point that hasn’t been made about CC. I refuse to give a company my personal information month after month that has been hacked (Oct 3, 2013). I just can’t do it. Now back on the other side of the fence… there shouldn’t be perpetual and “leasing”. It should be one or the other OR keep them both updated until the next major release.
You give the IRS your personal information year over year and they got hacked. I’m sure your bank has been hacked (even if you don’t know about it). Plus you are only giving them your information once. The same as if you bought the software. If you buy the software they only access it once and if you rent they do it once a month. They are both stored in the same place.
Valid point however, nothing is stored when I buy the box with cash at the big box store. I understand the bank and the IRS. Those are “have to” obligations just like utilities. But I’m not foolish enough to run to Target with my credit card. Ya’ll enjoy your CC. Think of me if you get your identity stolen.
Not meaning to sound rude but it was pointed out many many times that people that got Lightroom 6 would not be getting the new features as and when Adobe released them. As for giving your details to a company that has been hack, most companies have been hacked at one point or another. Google, Microsoft, Apple and Paypal get hacked on a daily bases.
I believe that Adobe wanted to just do a lease program, however there were always going to be people that wouldn’t be happy.
I believe that Adobe have done the best they could do without totally doing away with the stand-alone program, you will still get bug fixes.
Guess you won’t be buying anything at Target, or Kmart, or from Sony, or Staples, or shipping anything with UPS or the US Postal Service (both have been hacked), or eating at Jimmy John’s or PF Changs, or Chick-fil-A, or Dairy Queen, or buying with anything but cash at Home Depot, or using Evernote — the list goes on and on.
i’m loving it. And it’s not expensive.
The only thing i’m missing is to view or edit my photo’s in the cloud. Like it’s synchronize with my Desktop and Notebook. Not only my ipad or iphone.

I do understand where you are coming from and individually we all have a choice. Big companies and multinationals however have to make a corporate decision on how best to serve possibly millions of users, certainly hundreds of thousands. And at what point that infrastructure becomes unviable as a business needing to grow when you factor this in is always going to be challenging.
Anything done by man or woman can inevitably be undone by man or woman. If the federal departments in the USA can “lose” 4 million employees personnel records !! I think the info that Adobe hold is the least of your problems. It’s an unfortunate fact of life that we all have “adhere” and assess the risk in whatever we do.
As my credit card company provides insurance against personal losses on my card, I assess the risk as very low to non-existent. Save for the inconvenience of stopping and waiting for a new card and checking my credit score when any associated transactions pop up. The personal benefits to my enjoyment of my free time and, if you are a working shooter, far outways the risk I’ve described.
I won’t take unnecessary risks, but I also don’t want to live my life looking over my shoulder either. That’s character changing and more damaging to me to my mind mind.
Adobe did respond to the cries of foul play when perpetual license was first introduced so we have plenty of time to acclimatise. Who knows, it may even have been part of the master plan all along.
Just like building planning! Hit them with what they don’t want straight away then refine it so the alternative is 100 times better. But it was what they wanted all along.
I am with you 100% on the updates for the current version no matter what licence you have. I think that would be fair as we have furnished them the funds for that version ahead of life cycle. (I’m in your camp regarding my version) and yes, this does make me feel shortchanged. But as far as your reasoning on data handling and storage. All I can say is welcome to the 21st century.
Dean I appreciate your comment. Much more appreciated than the snarky comment by Mr. Kelby. I was merely trying to offer a different reason for not wanting CC than other people were complaining about. You are right it is character changing. It involves a change in thinking. There is no fail safe on identity theft but with some simple character changes I think the risk is less now. My debit card statement went from 68 transactions a month down to 7. But that’s neither here nor there. I believe Adobe would have been ahead if they had sold the paradigm that Lightroom is now two different products. Lightroom CC (that obviously gets the most attention) and Lightroom 6 which will get bug fixes but no added features. If you look back at the incremental updates there was only one 5.3 that had a small feature update and all the other updates from LR3 forward are just bug fixes until the next major release then there were feature updates (which always seem to have lots of bugs). The question now should be and I think as perpetual license holders we have a right to know in advance; Will there be a Lightroom 7?
I know how you feel. A house near me was broken into and I can’t continue to live indoors as long as people keep breaking into houses. I just can’t. I’ll be living in the woods.
