I truly believe Jay’s book is just that — and it will go on to be one of the all time classic books on photography, and we are giving away FIVE COPIES here on LRKT.com  just leave a comment and you’re entered to win. We’ll pick the FIVE winners on Friday and announce them here as well.

    Every year I teach a photography elective class to mixed class of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. By the time the students complete the course they can recite by heart; Light, Color, and Gesture. It would be nice to let them read a book by Mr. Maisel and look at his photos.

    UGH! I may be getting a little choked up over here. Almost every single image in the promo video is an image I see in my head, but have yet to create through the lens. This book appears to be the answer. Even if I do not win, I am buying this book and committing it to memory!

    I am a NYC photographer who very recently migrated to north florida, but when I was in NY I trained my eyes to try and see the way Mr. Maisel would see NY, and it has helped me greatly. Mr. Maisel is truly a master.

    A few years ago I really started getting into my photography and trying to improve what I could do. I started with Scotts Digital Photography series (which I still refer to) and after watching this introduction of Mr Maisel and his style’s I’m looking forward to reading further.     I’d grown to fully understand ‘being in the right place at the right time’. It’s just sometimes it needs to be ‘consistently in the right place…’ to really be appreciated.

    I would love to read the words of Mr Maisel and use it as a source of reference. There must be a reason why all the greats like Joe McNally and Scott Kelby respect this man. I have seen the interview from a is and the Paris trip and her I can’t get enough of this man! He is bold yet has a certain panache and grace that is indescribable. This book would be a great addition to my ever growing kelby training library. And once again u have created a photo groupie. Thank u for bring light to an amazing artist.

    I’m such a big fan of Jay Meisel that I watched his courses on KelbyOne over and over. I even take notes or quotes from them and read them once in a while. Here are a few:

    -You control only 2 things: when and where you shoot it.
    – 2 people are involved in a photo: photographer and viewer.
    – it’s not what you see or how hard it was to take that picture, it’s what the viewer will see.
    – Street photography: either you get what they’re doing or you get what they’re giving you.

    -if you embrace failure, it can’t hurt you in any way
    -if you always succeed, then your not trying hard enough.
    – if you talk and got nothing to say, it’s bad, but it’s not nearly half as bad as when your shooting with nothing to say, because you still have to edit the damn pictures later on.
    – Which part of “show me the pictures you would defend with your life didn’t you understand?
    – if you feel the need to explain your pictures or apologize for them, take’em out.

    – if you don’t know the difference between a bad picture and good picture, then nobody CAN trust you to do anything except the bad ones. They know at least that you’re gonna be able to do that. Because your gonna be judged by the worst ones.

    – If you try and say everything, you end up saying nothing.

    – Style is bullshit. Style is something very superficial. The very word means that something is gonna go out of style after a while.

    – Fashion is so ugly that they have to change it every 6 months.

    Some of them are Jay quoting someone else.

    I’ve learned quite a bit from watching the Jay Meisel series on Kelby online training. I’ve watched the first one several times and even wrote down some of the key points since I learn best by writing down what I want to remember.

    I love Jay, and I love his work. If this book is anything like his classes I’ve seen on Kelby Training it will be well worth the read. His amazing character comes through in his images, and his ability to look past what most people would see, and see beauty in the details.     Jay’s story he tells Scott in one of the ‘a day with’ series about the ‘anonymous’ phone call he made to the photographer who shot the photo of the kid behind the chainlink fence still tickles me to this day. Love Jay’s work, but also his wisdom, a true gent!

    One of my biggest career regrets happened about 9 years ago. I was attending a conference in San Diego and was in a class taught by Jay, it was on color and how it influences our images- I drank it all in. Immediately after his presentation, I ran up and pelted him with a few questions, all of which he kindly answered. It was then that I saw that Greg Gorman and Seth Resnick were waiting for him- and asked him, “Are you ready?” Jay looked at me and asked, “Jimmy- would you like to join us for lunch?” I paused and answered that I didn’t want to intrude and that he should enjoy his friends company. The three of them walked off and after about 5 minutes it hit me. Jay, Greg Gorman and Seth Resnick and I blew it. Maybe winning his book will help heal that wound… or re-remind me of my mistake!

    I would love to win this book, but if I do not, I will still buy this book. Your workshops with Jay Maisel and Joe McNally has single handedly change my work early in my career.

    Also, thanks for the advice on skin retouching on episode 120 of The Grid. I was the last photographer on the episode where Joe says “my skin does not breathe…” LOL. I was very good at retouching with a lot of experience (good and bad) but that episode made me dump what I was trying to do and get to natural looks.

    As an amateur living in the rural North Georgia Mountains, I don’t have many opportunities to learn other than from the internet (KelbyOne) or from books. You see, I’ve been fighting a life threatening illness for the past year and with my husband being a retired US military veteran, little things like a book just aren’t within our budget. I would love to have the opportunity to win this book as I still need help with composition, seeing a new perspective, having the camera with me and capturing those moments even if its on my way to the doctor’s office.     I took the Kelby course where you walked around Paris for 5 days & “picked” Jay’s brain. It was fascinating to listen to him talk about how he sees things, the light, the gesture. His viewpoint is unique & distinctive, fresh & compelling. It made me want to immediately go out & wander about, to relax & re-see things in a different perspective. His book is on my list of books to read in 2015, so I would love a copy!

(especially in New York) I can’t believe how many 35mm slides he has in that case. I would love to read his book and get more incite in to what his thought process is and the views of what makes his work great.

    I attended the first Eddie Adams workshop in 1988. Gregory Heisler showed his work one night until the week hour of the morning in a hotel room to anyone who wanted to attend. When the lights came back on after several hours there was Jay Maisel on the floor soaking up all of Heisler’s wisdom with us kids.

    A few years ago I had the extreme pleasure of participating in a Maine Media Workshop with Jay, what an experience. We shot JPGs only, no manipulation or editing of our images, what we saw in the viewfinder and what the camera delivered as a JPG was it.

    I would love to take in his New York course, that would be the ultimate photographic experience.

    Seen some great interviews with Mr. Maisel recently and his words are something everyone who’s still looking for “their style” should hear. He really opened up my eyes and gave me a new perspective on how I should look at my photography.     Thank you Scott for offering this book as a gift to one of us. I watched the longer version of the video on your website a couple weeks ago. During that conversation Mr. Maisel talked about always having your camera with you. A while back I switched to a smaller camera so I wouldn’t have any excuses any more as to why I couldn’t always have my camera with me.

    Jay Maisel has been one of my favorite photographers since I first saw his work in the 70s. He signed one of his posters for me at a photo show in the 80s that is framed and on my wall. If I don’t win a book, I’ll be ordering one on Saturday if I can wait that long.
